If a .ca domain does not get renewed before its renewal date, it is suspended for a period of 30 days. During this period, the nameservers and email for the domain will not work. The domain registrant is still entitled to renew the domain any time while the domain is suspended.
Once the 30 day suspended period is over, the expired domain will be added to the Canadian Internet Registration Authority's "to be released" (TBR) list. This is a list of dropping .ca domains that will be released for registration during the next TBR period. The TBR runs almost every Wednesday, from 2.00 p.m. to 3.00 p.m. Ottawa time.
As Canadians take more and more of their shopping and business to the internet, having a distinctive Canadian identity on the internet is increasingly important for Canadian businesses. This is a boom for the .ca market.
A .ca domain is widely recognized and respected from coast to coast and shows consumers that a business is truly Canadian. As a result, the number of .ca's registered is rapidly increasing and this is being matched by an increase in aftermarket .ca sales.
